Empowering Young Minds: My Journey Teaching Unprivileged Students with Behtar Tomorrow By Sakhi Agarwal

Volunteering is a beautiful way to give back to the community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. In this article, I want to share my incredible experience of teaching underprivileged students at Behtar Tomorrow, an inspiring foundation created by two students from Wynberg Allen School, Mussoorie, in 2022. Behtar Tomorrow aims to provide essential facilities, education, and awareness to children who are less fortunate. This heartwarming initiative is run by 50 members, including 15 volunteers, two teachers, and 33 children. As I reflect on my time spent with Behtar Tomorrow, I've come to realize that the act of giving can truly change the world in unexpected ways.

When I first learned about Behtar Tomorrow, there was a notice on the school's bulletin board inviting interested volunteers to join this noble cause. The idea of contributing to the betterment of these children's lives instantly resonated with me. I was eager to learn more about the initiative and meet the children, as well as offer any help I could.

My role within the foundation was to teach various subjects, including English, Hindi, Maths, Science, and Social Studies, to students ranging from U.K.G to 8th grade. Additionally, I had the opportunity to introduce them to broader topics such as global crises and current affairs. One of my fondest memories was teaching them the basics of the French language and Vedic Math. Witnessing their enthusiasm for learning and their willingness to absorb new knowledge was truly heartwarming.

As I began my journey with Behtar Tomorrow, I was filled with a sense of purpose and a desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of these children. What I didn't anticipate, however, was how much I would gain from this experience personally. It became evident to me that the act of giving not only benefits those on the receiving end but also brings immeasurable joy and fulfillment to the giver.

One of the most remarkable lessons I learned through this journey is that giving makes us happier. As I imparted knowledge and provided facilities that these children couldn't access otherwise, I found a profound sense of happiness and fulfillment within myself. It was a reminder that giving doesn't deplete us but rather enriches our own lives. The smiles on the faces of these young learners were a testament to the joy that giving can bring.

Moreover, my experience with Behtar Tomorrow taught me that giving can change the world in unexpected ways. The impact of our actions extends far beyond our immediate interactions. When I taught the children, I discovered that they, in turn, shared their newfound knowledge with others who couldn't attend the initiative. This ripple effect reminded me that small acts of kindness can lead to significant changes in the world. It reinforced the idea that even one person can make a substantial difference in the lives of many.

One of the most touching moments during my time with Behtar Tomorrow was when I decided to donate books to the less privileged students within the program. I purchased these books from a book fair at Wynberg Allen School, and the children's faces lit up with excitement when they received these gifts. This simple gesture not only warmed my heart but also earned me a place in the Honours Book – a prestigious recognition given by the principal to individuals who perform exceptional and intimate acts of kindness.

The Honours Book is not something that is handed out lightly; it's a rare acknowledgment. In 2022, I had the privilege of becoming the first recipient of this honor in the entire school. What made it even more special was that the school shared this achievement on social media platforms, making it a cherished memory that I'll forever hold dear. This experience served as a reminder that small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact and be recognized and appreciated by the community.

In conclusion, teaching at Behtar Tomorrow has been a profoundly transformative experience for me. It has reinforced the idea that education and kindness have the power to change lives and, ultimately, the world. I am immensely grateful to have been a part of this remarkable initiative and to have had the opportunity to touch the lives of these inspiring children. Behtar Tomorrow reminds us that by giving a little, we can make a big difference and create a brighter future for all. It is a testament to the fact that, through the act of giving, we not only empower others but also find true fulfillment and happiness within ourselves.

Making Waves: My Experience Meeting the Shark Tank Titans- By Abhierr Goyal

I awoke from my slumber with a surge of excitement coursing through my veins, as if every cell in my body was electrified with anticipation. It felt akin to stepping into a dream made manifest, a sensation I hadn't experienced in what seemed like an eternity. With a flutter of nervousness dancing in my stomach, I embarked on a journey to meet individuals whose accomplishments loomed larger than life itself.

As the bustling city of Mumbai greeted me, I couldn't help but notice the crispness of the air, a stark contrast to the haze of Delhi. The airport, a beacon of modernity, stood as a testament to progress, a far cry from my last visit. Weary from the journey, I sought refuge in the comforts of my hotel bed, eager to recharge for the adventures that lay ahead.

With the dawn of a new day, I emerged rejuvenated, ready to embrace the opportunities awaiting me on set. The atmosphere crackled with energy, teeming with countless souls pursuing their own aspirations. Amongst them stood Peeyush, a familiar face and friend of my father, introducing me to a cadre of luminaries – Namita Thapar, the visionary behind emcee pharmaceuticals and the indomitable force behind the phrase "I'M OUT"; Aman Gupta, whose infectious humor belied his shrewd business acumen as the helm of BOAT; Amit Jain, the driving force behind Car Dekho; and Anupam Mittal, the architect of love stories as the founder of shaadi.com.

As the first pitch commenced, I couldn't shake the feeling that some sought the spotlight more than investment, employing the stage as a platform for self-promotion. Yet amidst the theatrics, a beacon of genuine innovation pierced through the noise. It was a company helmed by brilliant minds from the hallowed halls of IIT, dedicated to crafting personalized wheelchairs with electric motor attachments, revolutionizing mobility for the disabled.

The product they presented was nothing short of revolutionary – a sleek design boasting a rechargeable, detachable battery with a staggering 12-hour lifespan. Its robust suspension promised smooth navigation through the labyrinthine streets of India. Witnessing its impact firsthand, as a young man in his twenties shared his transformation from dependency to independence, left an indelible mark on my soul.

"MEIN PEHLE APNE PARIVAAR PE NIRBHAR THA PAR ABH TO ULTA HI HO GAYA," he declared, his words echoing with newfound agency. Where once he relied on his family for sustenance, now he stood as a beacon of self-sufficiency, his livelihood empowered by innovation.

In that moment, it dawned on me that Shark Tank transcended mere investment; it was a crucible for problem-solving, a nexus where innovation intersected with humanity. It was a reminder that amidst the glitz and glamour, the true essence of entrepreneurship lay in addressing the unspoken needs of society, uplifting lives one innovation at a time.

Beneath the Surface of Plastic Pyrolysis: Unveiling the Promise and Pitfalls - By Abhierr Goyal

Image generated u sing DALL-E

"Plastic, Plastic Everywhere" - it's a mantra that's become all too familiar in our modern world. But have you ever stopped to consider the gravity of this issue and taken action to combat it? Plastic pollution isn't just an eyesore; it's a grave threat to our health and the environment. Picture this: animals confusing plastic for food, ingesting it, and suffering internal injuries. Birds, turtles, and marine life ensnared in plastic debris, struggling for survival. And let's not forget about the toxic chemicals leaching from plastic waste, contaminating our soil, water, and ultimately, our bodies.

I vividly remember my first encounter with the dire consequences of plastic pollution. It was during a visit to the serene and sustainable haven of Govardhan Eco Village. Amidst the lush greenery, I was introduced to the concept of plastic pyrolysis—an innovative solution that seemed like a silver bullet at first glance. However, as I delved deeper into the process, I unearthed its inherent flaws.

You see, plastic pyrolysis is touted as a beacon of hope, promising to break down plastic waste into valuable resources like oil and gas through controlled heating. But behind the veil of progress lies a dark truth: the process leaves behind a trail of toxic residue and emits harmful fumes when the derived fuel is burned.

As disillusioned as I was by this revelation, I refused to lose hope. I embarked on a quest to explore alternative solutions, driven by a deep-seated desire to combat plastic pollution. And lo and behold, the journey led me to remarkable discoveries.

One such revelation came from the far reaches of Japan, where a groundbreaking enzyme was discovered. Ideonella Sakaiensis, a bacterial marvel, possesses the extraordinary ability to break down PET plastic—the kind commonly used in bottles and containers—thanks to its PETase enzyme. Witnessing nature's ingenuity firsthand reignited my faith in the power of innovation.

But innovation isn't confined to laboratories; sometimes, it's born out of sheer determination. Inspired by my father, a seasoned builder, I witnessed firsthand his ingenious method of transforming plastic waste into sturdy bricks. Through a process of pulverization and compression under extreme conditions, he breathed new life into discarded plastic, paving the way for a sustainable future.

And then there's Singapore, a beacon of excellence in waste management. Their revolutionary approach to incineration not only eliminates plastic waste but also harnesses its energy to power homes, all while maintaining pristine environments and safeguarding public health.

In the face of plastic pollution, we stand at a crossroads. Will we succumb to despair, or will we rise to the occasion, armed with innovation and determination? The choice is ours to make. So let's dare to dream of a world where "Plastic, Plastic Everywhere" is but a distant memory, replaced by a future where sustainability reigns supreme.

The Synergy of Biotechnology and Behavior Modification: A New Frontier in Human Well-being by Tishya Agarwal

Image generated using DALL-E

Biotechnology is a rapidly evolving field that uses living organisms and natural processes to create products and solutions with significant implications for human health and the environment. Behavior modification, on the other hand, is a set of techniques based on learning theories that aim to improve human behavior. These two seemingly unrelated fields are now finding common ground as biotechnology is increasingly used in behavior modification strategies. This article will explore how biotechnology contributes to behavior modification, creating a powerful synergy between science and psychology.

Biotechnology's Role in Behavior Modification

Behavior modification techniques, primarily based on operant and respondent conditioning, have been critical in addressing various behavioral issues. Traditional methods often rely heavily on psychological interventions and external reinforcement. However, biotechnology offers innovative ways to personalize and enhance these interventions.

Positive Reinforcement and Biotechnology

Positive reinforcement, a central aspect of operant conditioning, involves rewarding or praising an individual after displaying a desired behavior. Biotechnology has opened up exciting possibilities for enhancing positive reinforcement. For instance, wearable biometric devices can monitor an individual's physiological responses in real-time, enabling immediate feedback and rewards based on the desired behavior.

Consider a scenario where a person is working on controlling their stress levels. A biometric device could continuously monitor their heart rate and stress hormone levels. If the individual successfully manages stress, the device could release a dose of endorphins, creating a natural "feel-good" reward. Integrating biotechnology and positive reinforcement can make behavior modification more effective and sustainable.

Moreover, neurotechnology advancements enable researchers to monitor brain activity and identify specific neural networks associated with positive behavior. This information can be used to develop personalized interventions that target and strengthen these neural networks, making the desired behavior more automatic and effortless.

Negative Reinforcement and Biotechnology

Negative reinforcement strengthens a behavior by removing an aversive stimulus or task. Biotechnology can enhance the effectiveness of negative reinforcement by making the removal of unpleasant consequences more immediate and precise. For example, consider a student striving for academic excellence. If they consistently achieve top grades, a biotechnology-driven system could automate tasks they find burdensome, such as cleaning or chores, instantly and as a direct result of their academic success.

This integration allows for the automation of negative reinforcement and ensures that the removal of unpleasant tasks is tightly linked to the desired behavior. It provides individuals a tangible and immediate benefit for their efforts, increasing motivation and adherence to behavior modification programs.

Furthermore, advancements in robotics and automation enable researchers to develop systems that can provide immediate feedback and support to individuals. For example, a robotic system could be programmed to provide verbal praise or physical assistance in completing a task, strengthening the desired behavior and increasing the likelihood of success.

Biotechnology and Personalized Behavior Modification

One of the most exciting aspects of biotechnology in behavior modification is personalization. Each individual is unique, and what serves as a reward or reinforcement may vary significantly from person to person. Biotechnology enables tailoring reinforcement strategies based on an individual's genetic makeup, physiological responses, and preferences.

Biotechnologists can design interventions that resonate most with a specific individual by analyzing genetic markers associated with reward sensitivity. Moreover, biometric data can inform real-time adjustments to reinforcement schedules, ensuring that they remain effective and engaging over time.

Ethical Considerations and Challenges

While integrating biotechnology and behavior modification holds great promise, it also raises ethical concerns. Privacy issues surrounding collecting and using personal biometric data must be carefully addressed. Additionally, there is a need for transparency and informed consent when employing these technologies in behavior modification interventions.

Moreover, it is crucial to avoid over-reliance on biotechnology, as human interaction and psychological support remain essential components of successful behavior modification. Biotechnology should be viewed as a tool to enhance, rather than replace, existing strategies.

Conclusion

Biotechnology is revolutionizing behavior modification by offering new ways to personalize and optimize reinforcement techniques. Integrating biometric data and genetic information can make behavior modification more effective, engaging, and tailored to individual needs. While ethical considerations and challenges exist, the potential benefits of this synergy between biotechnology and behavior modification are significant. As we move forward, it is essential to balance technological innovation and ethical responsibility, ensuring that these advancements lead to positive and sustainable changes in human behavior.

Report on the plight of Women Domestic Workers in India and the ray of hope in recent government schemes - by Arushi Goyal

Image Generated using DALL-E

India is known to have one of the lowest divorce rates in the world of a mere 1%. This often shocks people, as the rates of infidelity, domestic violence, and addiction, which are thought to be the main causes of divorce, are extremely high. When researchers looked more closely, they were shocked to find that most divorces in the West are caused not by infidelity or domestic violence but by the unequal distribution of household chores.

It has been hypothesized that the unequal distribution of chores is never a cause of divorce in India because women either conform to traditional gender roles and do all the housework, or domestic help cushions some of the impact of this disproportionate burden on women.

This means that domestic help not only cooks our food and cleans our homes but also keeps our marriages intact. So, if domestic workers are so essential to Indian households, why are they treated so poorly?

Around India, millions of young girls are forced to work in households. They are employed to cook, clean, and provide essential care for 14 to 18 hours a day on a salary less than minimum wage. They are often physically and mentally abused with no resources to escape their terrible situations.

Activists and NGOs around the world have been fighting with governments to create laws that help protect domestic workers; however, they do not qualify for any government benefits, lack protection against exploitation and abuse, and aren't guaranteed the minimum wage. Even when schemes are created for domestic help, there needs to be more awareness, and an insufficient support structure prevents them from being useful.

Domestic helpers are more vulnerable to harassment and abuse for a large number of reasons. Women in this sector are often poor, immigrants, illiterate, have low bargaining power and belong to a lower caste like SC or ST.

Over the past few decades, the Indian government has been working towards making this country a safer place for domestic workers through different schemes. The most prominent ones include the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan (PMSYM) scheme, which provides social security benefits to unorganized sector workers, including domestic help, through voluntary pension contributions; the Unorganized Workers' Social Security Act of 2008 aims to extend welfare measures, such as health insurance, maternity benefits, and life insurance; and the National Domestic Workers Policy, which seeks to regulate employment conditions and establish minimum wages, further protecting the rights of domestic workers.

These initiatives represent crucial steps toward formalizing and improving the working conditions of domestic workers in India; however, the long-term impacts of these schemes are yet to be seen.

Over the last five years, especially during COVID-19, the rates of abuse towards domestic workers have shot up drastically. The mistreatment of domestic workers in India is a grave social injustice that needs immediate attention and action. Recognizing their roles in society and providing them with legal protections, fair wages, and social security benefits is not only about keeping domestic workers safe but also about ensuring that every citizen in this country has access to their fundamental human rights. It is imperative that India takes substantial steps to eradicate the mistreatment of domestic workers and ensure their rights and dignity are upheld because if they don't, there will be unforeseen consequences.

Understanding Bone Fractures: Types, Causes, and the Healing Process - by Aayushi Sachdeva

What is a fracture?

A bone fracture is a complete or partial break in the continuity of bone tissue. Repeated strains, overuse, sudden force or pressure during accidents and conditions such as osteoporosis are the major causes of fractures.

Classification of Fractures-

  1. Comminuted Fractures:

This is the most severe fracture type. This type of fracture is mainly caused by severe physical traumas like car accidents and so are common to all age groups. Comminuted fractures can affect large bones in the body like-

  • Femur

  • Tibia

  • Radius

  • Ulna

  • Clavicle (Collar bone)

  • And even the Skull

The recovery in these cases often require surgery and full recovery can take even an        entire year.

2. Complete Fractures

This is the 2nd most severe type of Fracture. In this type of fracture, the bone separates into two pieces.

This is further classified into -

  1. Open Fractures- In an open complete fracture, the ends of the broken bone tear through the skin. When your bone and other internal tissues are exposed, it results in higher chances of infection. For patients having open fractures some additional measures like cleaning the wound, removing all dead and devitalized tissue, closing the skin at the proper time and delivering antibiotics to the impacted area need to be taken.

  2. Closed Fractures- In closed fracture, the broken bone doesn’t tear through the skin, resulting in lower chances of infection.

3. Impacted Fractures

In these Fractures, one fragment of bone pushes with high velocity into the second fragment of bone. These generally heal faster.

4. Greenstick Fractures

In these fractures, Collagen results in bending instead of breaking. The bone basically bends and cracks instead of breaking into separate pieces. It is similar to what happens on breaking a “green” branch on a tree. This kind of fracture is exclusively found in juveniles. Most greenstick fractures heal within 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the age of the child.

 5. Colles’ Fracture

This type of fracture occurs when someone falls on a hard surface with an outstretched hand. It results in a fracture of the distal end of the radius. It is common to all age groups but most common in elderly and/ or post menopausal women. Also common in people with osteoporosis. In some cases, the tip of the ulna may also be broken.

6. Pott’s Fracture

Pott’s fracture affects the distal ends of the lower limb bones. It can occur during activities such as playing Basketball, Volleyball or landing after a jump and activities involving sudden change of direction like Football and Rugby etc. It affects one or both of the malleoli. A certain amount of stress is placed on the tibia, fibula and the ankle joint. When this stress is traumatic, a break in the medial, lateral or posterior malleolus may occur.

7. Pathological Fracture

A pathological fracture is a type of fracture caused by a disease rather than an injury. Some diseases tend to weaken our bones and make them vulnerable to even routine things like stepping out of a car, going for a walk, coughing and sneezing etc. Some illnesses leading to pathologic fractures are-

  • Osteoporosis- A medical condition in which the bones become fragile and brittle. In this disease, the osteoclast activity remains normal but the osteoblast activity goes down. It results in a hunched posture, shrinkage of vertebrae, height loss etc. It has higher incidence in women due to smaller body build and sexually dimorphic characters between women and men.

  • Osteomalacia- It is a condition that softens the bones.

  • Osteomyelitis- It’s caused by a bacterial or fungal infection spreading to nearby bones. In rare cases, it leads to pathological fractures.

Bone Repair

  • Hematoma Formation- It is a kind of clotting formed by the breaking of vasculature. The               blood doesn’t go out of the periosteum so leads to the characteristic swelling.

  • Formation of Fibrocartilaginous callus-

  • Building up of cartilage in the region

  • Keeps the two portions of bone closely associated with one another

  • Allows the osteoblasts to secrete fully formed extracellular matrix

  • Allows the osteoclasts to breakdown portions of the bone that are no longer needed

  • Development of this callus can take 5-6 hours or some weeks depending upon how serious the fracture is

Here’s a summary of a project I submitted recently.  It explores the significant role of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in credit creation, focusing on its functions, governance structure, and credit control measures. Here's a concise summary of the key points:

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stands as the central bank of India, established in 1935, with its primary functions including monetary management, financial regulation, and economic development. It is pivotal in shaping India's financial landscape and ensuring monetary stability.

The RBI's governance structure includes a central board of directors, comprising the Governor, Deputy Governors, and directors representing various fields, all appointed by the Government of India. This diverse composition ensures effective decision-making and policy formulation.

The functions of the RBI encompass monetary management, supervision and regulation of financial institutions, regulation of financial markets, management of foreign exchange reserves, acting as a banker to governments, and promoting economic development. The RBI plays a multifaceted role, from formulating monetary policy to fostering financial stability.

Credit control is a crucial aspect of the RBI's functions. It involves lending money to customers based on their creditworthiness to minimize the risk of defaults. Credit control is essential for maintaining cash flows and ensuring the liquidity of lending institutions.

The RBI employs various tools for credit creation, including the bank rate, cash reserve ratio (CRR), statutory liquidity ratio (SLR), open market operations (OMO), repo rate, reverse repo rate, and qualitative methods like margin rates. These tools influence the money supply, interest rates, and overall financial stability in the economy.

Introducing India's e-RUPI: Revolutionizing Welfare Services with Digital Vouchers - by Kishhit Garg

In this rapidly evolving digital age, the government has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to deliver welfare services to eligible beneficiaries seamlessly. Say hello to e-RUPI, a game-changing system that harnesses the power of technology to bring welfare support directly to the hands of those who need it most. Let's dive into the details of this innovative government endeavor set to transform how welfare services are provided.

So, what exactly is e-RUPI? In simple terms, it's a contactless and cashless pre-paid digital payment system. The government issues pre-paid digital vouchers to beneficiaries, delivered straight to their mobile phones. These digital vouchers act as a medium of exchange, enabling the purchase of specific goods or services. However, it's important to note that e-RUPI doesn't allow the conversion of the voucher into cash or its transfer to another individual.

The delivery of e-RUPI to beneficiaries is facilitated through QR codes or SMS-based e-vouchers. What sets e-RUPI apart from other digital payment methods is that it doesn't require the beneficiary to have a bank account. This key differentiator ensures that even individuals without bank access can receive welfare support directly and conveniently.

One of the primary objectives of e-RUPI is to simplify the redemption process while maintaining the privacy and security of personal information. Unlike other digital payment systems that may demand the use of digital cards or payment apps, e-RUPI ensures a hassle-free experience. No bank account, internet connection, or expensive smartphone are required. It's a user-friendly system that can be accessed through any basic phone.

The benefits of e-RUPI are manifold. By streamlining the welfare delivery process, e-RUPI ensures that funds reach individuals in need promptly and efficiently. It eliminates the delays and potential misuse associated with traditional methods. This direct payment approach is set to revolutionize how individuals receive government support, bringing relief to those requiring it most urgently.

Moreover, e-RUPI is designed to enhance transparency and accountability in government benefit transfers. By leveraging digital vouchers, it enables the tracking and maintenance of beneficiary details, ensuring that welfare services are provided to the right individuals. This strengthens the overall welfare system and minimizes the scope for fraud and misappropriation.

In addition to the transformative impact on welfare services, e-RUPI brings about cost savings and environmental benefits. Gone are the days of physically printing out vouchers, as e-RUPI eliminates the need for physical documentation. This eco-friendly approach reduces paper waste and streamlines administrative processes.

It's important to note that e-RUPI does come with certain limitations. The inability to save vouchers for unforeseen circumstances and the restriction on transferring them to others in need might pose challenges. Additionally, individuals without access to a mobile phone are unable to benefit from e-RUPI. However, considering its positive impact in terms of direct benefit transfers, cost savings, and increased transparency, e-RUPI is poised to revolutionize welfare services on a large scale.

In conclusion, e-RUPI is an innovative step towards a digital future, where welfare services are delivered seamlessly and efficiently. With its contactless and cashless system, e-RUPI empowers individuals to access and redeem their entitlements easily, without the need for a bank account or expensive smartphones. It promises to bring transparency, speed, and security to welfare transfers, positively impacting millions' lives. As we embrace the era of digital transformation, e-RUPI paves the way for a more inclusive and effective welfare system.

Inflation - The Silent Tax on Your Money by Adit Sehgal

Have you ever heard of inflation? It might sound like a big, scary word, but don't worry – we're here to break it down for you in simple terms.

Imagine you have $100 today, and you decide to keep it under your mattress for a year. Seems like a good plan, right? Well, not exactly. That $100 won't buy you the same things a year from now. Why? Because of inflation.

What is Inflation?

Inflation is something that slowly steals the purchasing power of your money. It's the reason why the same candy bar that used to cost $1 now costs $1.50. In simple terms, it's the rise in prices of everyday things over time.

Why Does Inflation Happen?

One big reason is that as our economy grows, there's more demand for goods and services. When there's too much demand and not enough supply, prices go up. It's like when everyone wants the latest video game, and the store runs out – they can charge more for it.

The Silent Tax

Inflation is often called "the silent tax" because it silently eats away at your money without you even noticing. So, you might think you're saving money by stashing it away, but in reality, you're losing purchasing power.

How to Beat Inflation?

  1. Invest Wisely: Instead of hiding your money, consider investing it in things like stocks, bonds, or real estate. These investments have the potential to grow faster than inflation.

  2. Diversify: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your investments to spread the risk.

  3. Stay Informed: Keep learning about money and finance. The more you know, the better equipped you are to make smart financial decisions.

Inflation might be a silent tax, but with knowledge and the right investment strategy, you can protect your money's purchasing power. So, young investors, remember that your dollars today might not be worth as much tomorrow, but with the right approach, you can make your money work for you. Happy investing!

What Is a PE Ratio, and Why Should Young Investors Care? - by Adit Sehgal

If you're a young investor just starting your journey into the world of finance, you've probably heard the term "PE ratio" being thrown around. But what exactly is it, and how can it help you make smart investment decisions? Let's break it down in simple terms.

What is PE Ratio?

PE stands for "Price-to-Earnings" ratio, and it's a handy tool that helps investors like you and me understand if a stock is reasonably priced or not. Think of it as a way to peek into a company's financial health.

How Does It Work?

The PE ratio is like a magic formula. It's calculated by taking the current stock price (what you'd pay for one share) and dividing it by the company's earnings per share (EPS). Don't worry; you don't have to do the math yourself; financial websites and apps will do it for you.

Here's a simple example:

Let's say you're interested in a company called ABC Inc. Its stock is currently priced at $20 per share, and its earnings per share for the last year were $2. So, the PE ratio for ABC Inc. is 20/2, which equals 10.

What Does the PE Ratio Tell You?

The PE ratio helps you gauge whether a stock is cheap or expensive compared to its earnings. A high PE ratio usually suggests that investors are expecting big things from the company in the future. Conversely, a low PE ratio might mean that the stock is currently undervalued.

Warren Buffett, one of the greatest investors of all time, once said, "Price is what you pay, value is what you get." This means that just because a stock has a high PE ratio doesn't mean it's a bad investment if you believe it's worth the price. Understanding the company behind the stock is crucial, not just its PE ratio.

Using PE Ratio Wisely:

  1. Compare It: Look at the PE ratio of a company you're interested in and compare it to similar companies in the same industry. This can give you a sense of whether it's overpriced or a bargain.

  2. Consider Growth: If you're investing in a small tech company with high growth potential, a high PE ratio might be justified. But if it's a mature company with stable earnings, a lower PE ratio might be more appropriate.

  3. Long-Term Perspective: The PE ratio is just one piece of the puzzle. Don't base your investment decisions solely on it. Consider other factors like the company's financial health, competition, and market trends.

In conclusion, the PE ratio is a useful tool for young investors like you. It can provide insight into whether a stock is a good buy or not, but remember, it's not the only thing to look at. Take the time to understand the company you're investing in, and use the PE ratio as a helpful guide in your journey to financial success.

The effects of radiotherapy in children diagnosed with cancer can lead to multiple complications, one of the most notable being the increased susceptibility to dental caries. This research paper delves into the complexities of "Radiation induced dental caries in children with cancer" and showcases how digital technology can play an integral role in both the prevention and treatment of this condition.

The study begins by emphasizing the indispensable role radiation therapy plays in pediatric oncology, specifically in targeting and eliminating cancerous cells. While the therapy is instrumental in improving survival rates, it comes with its own set of challenges. Among the myriad complications, dental caries stands out as a significant long-term effect. Dental caries, commonly recognized as tooth decay, arises from an imbalance between tooth demineralization and remineralization, influenced by factors such as bacteria, dietary sugars, and saliva flow. The study underscores the fact that children who undergo radiation treatment, especially in the head and neck region, are at a heightened risk as the therapy can inadvertently compromise the salivary gland function, leading to decreased saliva flow or xerostomia. Reduced saliva flow can disrupt the mouth's natural pH balance, making it a conducive environment for bacteria that cause dental caries.

Two articles form the core of the research's data pool. The first article conducted a cross-sectional study on children, some of whom had undergone cancer treatment, and found a higher DMF (Decayed, Missing, Filled) index in cancer patients, emphasizing the need for professional dental care for this demographic. In particular, the study pinpoints the importance of dental care for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, as socioeconomic status also plays a role in dental health. The second article, pivoting from the direct effects of cancer treatment, examines dental care utilization among long-term survivors of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer. It draws attention to the alarming trend of decreased dental visits among AYA cancer survivors and the challenges they face in accessing necessary dental care, with the lack of dental insurance emerging as a predominant barrier. This article suggests a pressing need for interventions to bridge this accessibility gap.

The research further contrasts the two articles, observing that while the first zeroes in on the prevalence of dental caries in childhood cancer survivors, the second adopts a broader lens, analyzing overall dental care utilization and its associated barriers. Despite the differential focus, both articles converge on the consensus that professional dental care, especially tailored to address the unique challenges faced by cancer survivors, is of paramount importance.

Innovations in the realm of digital dentistry can pave the way for better dental care for childhood cancer survivors. The paper highlights some groundbreaking tools like Diagnodent, which uses laser fluorescence to detect hidden cavities, intraoral cameras that provide detailed images of dental structures, and CAD/CAM technology that facilitates the creation of precise dental prosthetics. These technologies, by enabling early detection and accurate treatment, hold the potential to revolutionize dental care for children who have undergone radiotherapy.

To conclude, the research underscores the criticality of understanding and effectively addressing dental caries in pediatric cancer patients. There's an explicit call to action for healthcare providers to assimilate digital advancements in their practices, ensuring that childhood cancer survivors are not further burdened by preventable dental complications. The paper advocates for continued research, aiming to continually refine and optimize treatment strategies to improve the oral health and holistic well-being of this vulnerable demographic.

Teach problem solving skills Seva Bharati’s enrichment center in New Delhi - Sachit Gupta

Igniting curiosity by intertwining puzzles with math lessons

During my summer of 2021 at the Seva Bharati’s enrichment center in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, I was more than just a math instructor. I was a bridge, connecting to children of construction workers and understanding their unique perspectives. I took a hands-on approach, combining traditional teaching methods with puzzle-based learning. This not only taught math but also fostered problem-solving skills. Organizing the Julia Robinson Math Festival was a highlight, turning abstract math into relatable concepts for my 18 middle-schoolers.

The next summer threw a curveball: reignite the love for math in five high schoolers. By intertwining captivating video lessons from Numberphile and 3Blue1Brown with direct problem-solving sessions, I didn't just teach; I connected. I saw their eyes light up, curiosity reborn, as they engaged deeply with math again.

Reflecting on my journey at Seva Bharati, it wasn’t just about mathematical principles but human connections. By integrating innovative techniques with a dash of personal touch, I believe I've enriched their academic journey and formed meaningful bonds that will last a lifetime.
